Religious School News

On the first day of Hebrew School this year, which fell on the Sunday between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, we welcomed our neighbor from down the street, Rabbi Meir Rubashkin of Chabad to present a wonderful program to the children. He explained the significance of the Shofar and provided each child with a ram’s horn to make his/her own Shofar.  The children sanded the horns, helped saw off the tips, watched while a hole was drilled and then poured water into the opening hole to determine if it would go all the way through. The children learned to blow their own horns, practicing tekiah, teruah and shevarim.  Many thanks to Rabbi Meir and his son Chaim for joining us that day and teaching what makes a kosher Shofar (that it comes from a kosher animal, one with a split hoof – not cloven or toes, and that its horn is not bone but rather cartilage) and for providing the memorable hands-on project.
