The Women’s Club met with nine women in attendance on Sunday, March 4, 2018. We ate lunch then discussed the book club selection for next month, A Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman. Phyllis Sherman has arranged for the books to be available from the Huntington Library. They will be in sometime later this week. The book discussion will take place at our next meeting on Sunday, April 8 at noon.
We took a few minutes to discuss some possible selections for the next year’s book club meeting. This group decided that two books per year is about right for us so the next book discussion will be next winter. Janet Sutta shared some quotes from Haven by Ruth Gruber, 1994. This is the unknown story of 1,000 WWII refuges and how they came to America. Gruber was featured in the Israeli Movie Night documentary last month. Alice Lichtenstein suggested My Promise Land: the Triumph and Tragedy, 2015, by Ari Shavit. We had a brief discussion of how anti-Semitism seems to be on the rise in the US again and of the complexity of what is happening in Israel today. Keep reading in the meantime, and bring any interesting books to a Women’s Club meeting to share.
The group also discussed having ALL members of TBE participate in a Friday night Shabbat dinner. We are looking to form a committee to discuss this idea. Contact Stephanie, firstname.lastname@example.org , or Janet, email@example.com, and look for more information in another email soon if you would like to help plan this or host a dinner.
